Final day in the eternal city

June 6, 2015

We had a nice last day in Roma and tried something new. We rode the recently added elevator to, the top of the Vittorio Emanuel II monument for some incredible views of Roma. The views are even better than the top of St. Peter’s! This is definitely recommended.

Up to the Vesuvio Crater

June 2, 2015

We took the trip up to the Vesuvio crater yesterday. What an amazing site! The attached Photos will give you a feel for the scale but it is hard to capture. You can even see steam escaping in one of the shots showing that this is still an active volcano!

Pizza by the Meter

June 1, 2015

Yesterday we set off to walk to Vico Equense which is about 6 miles away. We got to Meta about halfway and discovered that the road goes almost straight up for a mile or so over the mountain. Looks like a needed enhancement to Apple maps is elevation information 🙂 We took the train the rest of the way. Our reason for the trip was to try a new pizza place, Pizza a metro (aka Pizza University). The Pizza is sold by the Meter. One meter serves about 5 people so we ordered a half meter for 2. This pizza rivals Da Michele in Napoli but it’s a bit different in that they add parmigiano, non standard but an interesting addition that added a bit of a different flavor. We also had an appetizer of fried Italian delights (rice balls, Potatoe croquets, etc.), also very good. We also found a great pasticceria along the way in Meta (Romano).

Nobleman’s Bath and the long goodbye

May 29, 2015

We walked to the Nobleman’s bath yesterday. This is the amazing Roman ruin of a Nobleman’s palace and his adjoining natural “bath” created by a natural land formation. It’s also a great walk! We then had a late lunch and wrapped up shopping in anticipation of Bill, Sandy, Susan and Grace heading home. 😦

I bought some pens made of wood by one of the inlaid wood artisans of Sorrento. This man has been making these beautiful wood objects for 60 years! We met his son, Salvation, one of the next generation of artisans. I’m very happy to see this tradition carry on!

Poliziano!

May 18, 2015

We made a pit stop at one of our favorite wineries, Poliziano, on the way to Montepulciano. A really nice guy, Fabio, provided the tasting. Awesome! Another case is headed home.

Arrivo Roma

May 17, 2015

We arrived in Roma yesterday, met up with Bill and Sandy who flew in from NY and spent a nice day exploring piazzas and drinking vino. We wrapped up the day with a nice dinner at Otello. The first day is always tough after a sleepless night on the plane. We always try to stay awake  to avoid jet lag.

Arrivederci, Graciella!

May 4, 2014

Grace headed back to Atlanta on Thursday. We took the trip with her to Napoli to wish her off and had a Pizza. Our usual place, Antica Pizzeria Da Michele, was packed with about a hundred people outside waiting (it was a holiday) so the cabbie took us to his favorite place; Pallone – it was very good but then I think it is hard to get a bad pizza in Napoli!…..
